Dog Toys
Dogs are some of the best companions there are in the animal kingdom. Unlike cats, they're loyal, friendly, and dependent. They will always receive you as if they hadn't seen you in years.
Part of the reason is because dogs have accepted man as a regular member of their doghood. They see us as equals and they even share their food with us. Some people would say that they can even sense when were sad or depressed. In any case, it is really comforting to have our pet near us during bad times.
Owning a dog can also mean some investment on your part, the amount of which is totally up to you. Some people invest hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars in buying a purebred puppy. Veterinarians don't come cheap, and the proof of this is that insurance companies have started selling pet health insurance policies.
Since you're already spending some money on your dog, why don't you consider getting a few dog toys as well? Dog toys are generally inexpensive and they will keep your dog entertained for hours. This is especially useful during those times when you have work to do and can't play with him.
Dog toys also have the advantage of helping your dog stay healthy. For example, a fake bone for munching will keep its jaws and teeth strong. It can also be used to play fetch, so your dog will do a lot of exercise.
Another good dog toy is a ball. Not any ball, of course, as some balls are dangerous to your pet. There are balls that are especially manufactured for dogs, so they can bite them and carry them safely in their mouths, without risk of choking. There is yet another advantage that you might not have thought of. Balls bounce and move a lot, which will satisfy your dog's need to catch something that is trying to "escape."
Dogs used to be hunting carnivores, and although they don't need to hunt anymore, its a good idea to let that energy be channeled in a non-threatening way. Just be careful to play in an area thats safe for your pet. When dogs go after a ball, they pretty much ignore everything else (since their hunting instincts tell them it's the prey who is in danger, not them). That includes people, children, other pets, and worst of all, cars.
When buying a dog toy, be sure to check that the toy is appropriate for its breed, size and age. Dogs are like children, they have different needs and likes. Also, like children, playing with your dog keeps you young.
