Dog Coat
Some people think that dog coats are superfluous and serve no other purpose than to satisfy the dogs owner fashion sense by imposing an artificial piece of clothing that is just a bother for the animal, since it has a natural coat already.
While its true that a dog coat is frequently used for fashion and style, it can also serve several practical and useful purposes.
First of all, while dogs have natural hair, that doesnt necessarily mean that its the most suited for the climate of the area you live in. For example, a person from New York might buy a purebred Chihuahua puppy. Since the puppy is a species native to the desert, its natural coat wont be enough to withstand the cold winter and snow of New York. In these cases, a dog coat will keep the puppy warm when its owner takes it for a walk or to the veterinarian. Some places even sell small dog boots that will keep snowballs from forming in their paws.
In the same way, if you live in an area that has a lot of rain or humidity, a waterproof dog coat would be a good idea if you have a dog that has a lot of hair or that gets sick easily when wet.
In addition, a dog coat will help keep insects and bugs from attacking your dog. Its specially useful to avoid having fleas or other insects from becoming permanent guests of your dogs fur.
Speaking of fur, a dog coat will protect your dogs pelage. This is crucial for animals that take part in dog shows and contests, where the quality of the hair is judged harshly. It might not mean much to you if you have never been to one of these shows, but dog shows entrance fees are very expensive, and you dont really want to waste all that money just to be disqualified in the first round because someone dropped some ice cream on your dog.
And yes, a dog coat can also be a fashion statement. Some people like to make their dogs wear coats that match their own clothes. In addition, some dog coats are used to disguise your dog for special holidays. Some people like to make their dogs wear reindeer-like disguises, complete with antlers, for Christmas pictures; or maybe a black cape for Halloween.
There is nothing wrong with that, just remember that moderation is the key. All types of coats should be used only temporally, as they can be bothersome to dogs during long periods of time. A dog coat should only serve its purpose and then put away until the next time its needed.
