Bones And Muscles - Horse Anatomy
When it comes to caring for your horse, it is very important that you understand several basic parts of
horse anatomy. Careful study of your horse over several years, reading books on your own or talking
to your vet are the best ways learn the
basics of keeping your horse healthy.
First of all, you should know that laying down is very hard on your horse. A horse's body is not meant to
lay down for long periods of time. If you find your horse is laying down, for any unsual length of time,
there is a good chance something is wrong with him. When a horse lays down, they are
risking damaging their internal organs... So if your horse is not on its feet, be ready to
call your vet immediately, because it is an emergency.
Because of this need to be upright, it should be no surprise to learn that your
horse's legs are the most important part of his body. Not only do they carry all of his weight. They
must support him and keep him standing while he is sleeping as well as when he is awake. And yet
you have surely noticed that in comparison to the horse's main body, the legs are
relatively thin and thus are easy to damage.

If a horse gets a broken leg, there is going to be a lot
of problems. He may not be able to stand up and he won't be able to lie down to mend the leg.
The mending process can be
quite painful and awkward and protracted. While veterinarian medicine has made great strides
and can often save horses with broken legs. There is truth to the old practice of putting down horses
who have leg problems. This is still sometimes necessary, if the leg refuses to heal.
As a horse owner it is your duty to take care of your horse's legs and feet at all times.
Your horse will have a happier
and healthier life and you will be happier, too.
Another area of concern when it comes to horse anatomy, is a horse's skin and coat. Whenever
possible groom your horse each day. And grooming is especially necessary after each time
you ride him. The quality of your horse's coat, hoof and skin is a good indicator of your horse's
general health and the adequacy of his diet. Your horse should have a a sleek, glowing coat
and supple, healthy skin. If that is not the case, check your horse's diet and if necesaary
have your vet do an examination.
Horses are fantastic creature with a very advanced heart and lung system. Their respiratory and
circulatory systems allow
them to keep running or walking for along time and to carry a rider or other loads.
This doesn't mean that your horse never needs to rest; it simply means that you can exercise
your horse more than you are going to be able to exercise yourself! There is a reason why
the horse was a major means of travel for hundreds, if not thousands, of years!
The bones and muscles of your horse, indeed all of a horse's anatomy is very
special. Keep this in mind as you care for and enjoy your hroses.
