Aquarium Fish Disease Diagnosis

The most common cause of death in aquarium fish is disease. This accounts for more tank deaths than any other cause, but its something you can easily avoid. The predominant reason for spread of disease within tanks is poor water quality.

There are several factors that can contribute to poor water quality. These can be over-crowding, irregular cleaning or placing too much food in one tank for the amount of fish present.

Another cause of disease can be buying an already-diseased fish from a store and entering it to your aquarium to spread to your previously healthy fish. Before buying any new fish you should always check the condition of all the fish within the tank before you make your selection. No matter how healthy the fish you purchase might seem, if another fish in that buying tank has a disease then it could potentially spread to all other fish.

Typical Aquarium Fish Diseases:

Fin Rot: Fin rot is a serious bacterial infection that is spread through a tank quickly. This disease can cause fins to literally rot off your fish. When fish become injured they can e asily pick up bacteria that can cause infection. An overcrowded tank may also make your fish stressed which reduces their ability to fight off impending infections.

White Spot: White spot presents as tiny white dots on your fishs scales. These dots aren't fungus or bacteria. Theyre actually parasites called Ichtyopthirius and they attach themselves to your fish's scales so they can eat the soft flesh beneath. This can make your fish quite sick and even kill them, so be sure you monitor your fish carefully for signs of white spot.

Hole In The Head: Tiny dimples or dents on the sides of your fish's heads can indicate that your chemical water levels are incorrect. Hole in the Head is thought to be caused by unbalanced water levels. Check your aquariums nitrate levels and adjust your tanks water immediately. If necessary, change the water as well and be sure the temperature is correct to reduce stress levels of your fish.

Fungus: Fungus on fish appears like little bits of fluffy white cotton on or around the sites of wounds or injuries. If you have an injured fish, monitor it closely for signs of fungal growth. If your aquarium has any fish with fungal infections, its important to change the water at once to stop the spread of the fungus.

Most aquarium fish diseases can be controlled easily by keeping your water clean, which reduces the ammonia levels. Changing water regularly can also help to stop the spread of other diseases, although its important to be sure youre re-filling to the correct temperature to avoid stressing your fish, which lowers their immune resistance levels.

Keep your tank maintained and youll be enjoying healthy fish for a long time to come.
